A crucial step in getting your message across to the consumer is getting them to click on your email and open it. In the early days of Email, this was a simple task as everyone opened every email. However, the onslaught of spam and viruses have ensured that people are very careful of which emails they open.
The trick in getting a customer’s attention is to arouse their curiosity. As long as they are intrigued, they will click. Therefore, here are four shameless ways that will work towards getting the interest of your target market.
Personalization – Get their name into the headline. “Howard, there’s a great deal on the….” is a fantastic way of getting that person’s attention. This technique has been abused by spammers, so use it with a known customer base who will appreciate it more.
Date specific – Create urgency about the product or event. “Today only”, “Offer ends tomorrow”, “For the first ten customers today and tomorrow” and “Offer valid till midnight” are some examples of how you can build up the urgency.
Micro managing your copy – Figure out what works for your market and base your copy accordingly. Even something as simple as “Today Only”, “today only” and “Today only” can work differently in the consumers mind even though they say the same thing.
Signs – Use some sort of signage at the beginning of the subject line to grab attention. This can be a symbol such as (==>) or a bullet point. Whatever you choose, just make it stand out from the rest of the subject lines in an inbox.
As with any technique that you use to improve your business, experiment with what you do. You might even discover more ways to
make your message more effective!
