Flash, a technology Macromedia developed, gives the webmaster the ability to have animated logos and videos, interactive graphics, and colors on a website. It makes the site look very smooth in terms of graphics and very pleasing to the eye. Therefore, the temptation to use Flash when designing a webpage or even the whole website is great, but you should think first before deciding to use the technology.
The question you must ask yourself before you decide on how much of Flash to use or whether to use it at all is: Does the website really need it? For example, if the primary focus of the website is to deliver up-to-date information or even simple white paper delivery, using Flash becomes a waste of time and resources. However, if the focus is to deliver Art, then the website itself must look as creative and arty as the content, thereby endorsing the use of Flash.
There are several things to keep in mind when you make the decision to use Flash.
1. File size – Flash banners and Flash websites in particular tend to be large. If your target market is on a dial-up connection, this would inconvenience them and make them lose interest. Keep your Flash project optimized.
2. Compatibility – Although most people now have Flash plugins installed on their browser, there are a few who do not have them. There also those who browse off of mobile platforms that do not have Flash support.
3. Annoyance – As we breathe a sigh of relief at the disappearance of pop-up window with advertisements, Flash has started taking over that realm with flashy ads that pop-up within the webpage. Be mindful of how your banners function and what colors you use.
Although the abovementioned problems are not devastating, they are however vital to keep in mind when designing a website. Effective use will garner approval, while overuse will lead to a loss in traffic.
